Pyrolysis is a thermo-chemical decomposition of large organic molecules that occurs during heating in an oxygen-free environment. During pyrolysis, the pellets (wood or other woody biomass) are split into two components, syngas (excellent gas as a fuel, developing a strong flame that heats and lights) and biochar (solid charcoal residue that continues to generate heat as the flame decreases until it dies out; excellent as a fertilizer for vegetable gardens, potted plants and flowers).
